Our
Story

It started with a group of friends…

When Danny Mallow and Chris Hume first met, they were two young men in their mid twenties with a couple of backpacks and a shared mission to travel the world. They managed to travel thirty-six countries, meeting the people who would become their life-long friends along the way, and experiencing places where the modern world had not yet reached. Along the way they met tons of fellow travellers who wanted to explore the boys’ home-country of Canada, but found it prohibitively expensive, difficult to find transport, and too crowded in all the regular spots.

After travelling for nearly a decade, the boys and some of their friends returned home with a mission in mind… Open up Canada through guided travel for solo travellers!

Our Goals

Rooted is proud to provide employment to travellers and their pooches! All of our guide’s dogs are friendly and trained to a high standard and are excited to start their adventure with you!

Carly’s Experience with the Island Wanderer

Update: July 5th, 2024

Don’t miss out! Book the Island Wanderer here!

When Carly first set her sights on Canada’s Northwest coast, it was primarily to avoid the crowds that flocked to Portland and Seattle every summer. “I figured there was so much more land up north that I could explore and I hadn’t heard of too many people taking the Pacific coastal highway experience across the border.” She told me, “But I wasn’t really sure where to get started or what to see, and I also didn’t have a car with me. I think I was stuck in Vancouver for about three days before I gave up trying to do it on my own and started looking at tour companies.”

Carly had associated tour companies with crowded sightseeing and an older demographic, which was why she was so excited to find Rooted Travel Co., who were eager to show young, solo travellers around the hidden gems of Canada’s Pacific Northwest. She was even more excited to find the Island Wanderer, which was easy to get to from her Vancouver hostel by taking the ferry to either Nanaimo or Victoria, where she could get picked up right at the ferry terminal! The bus system and inexpensive fares made arriving at the meetup points super easy!

“It was such a relief to find Rooted, their prices were comparable with what it would have cost me to rent a car and book hotels, because it was almost impossible to get out of the city without doing one or the other. They also put such a big focus on community, not only the community within the group, but in learning about the locals too! I would never have done half the things we did if I planned my own road trip.”

Carly signed up for the Island Wanderer, which takes travellers all the way up the coast of Canada’s beautiful Vancouver Island. “There were crowds in some places,” she nods, “But at the same time there were some places where I felt like one of the last people on earth! Malcom Island for example had such a community feel to it, and though Tofino was busy, our camping spot on Vargas Island was much less so.”

“The nature was incredible!” She said, when asked about her favourite part of the trip. “We learned so much about the plants and traditional harvesting methods, and about some of the local businesses that were doing really cool things to promote sustainability. I think I most appreciated the classes with some of our indigenous teachers and it felt good to know the company cared enough to find these people for us to talk to.”

What stuck out to me during our conversation was the constant buzzing of her phone on the table, for which she apologized profusely. “It’s our trip group chat, one of the guys wants to plan a kayaking trip in Canada for later this summer. We all really enjoyed our guided kayak trip on the tour so we figured we would give it a try. Wish me luck, it’ll only be my second time kayaking!”

I remarked that she seemed nervous about being back in a kayak and she laughed. “Honestly I felt nervous before the tour too, I had only ever done some light hiking in Vermont and hadn’t tried any of the other activities, and so I figured I would be way behind! But it turned out it was always someone’s first time doing something, and our guide Denysha created such a comfortable environment I never felt like I was holding anyone back.”

When I asked her if she would recommend the experience to other travellers, she held up both hands, fingers splayed. "Ten out of ten! Don't let your brain hold you back!"

Book the Island Wanderer today and get started with your Canadian trip here!

Solo Travelling: How to make friends

Update: July 5th, 2024

Meet friends with the Rooted method, book and meet other travellers here.

Your friend Danny went solo travelling a year ago, now his instagram is dotted with photos of him and his friends posing in front of various monuments around the world. Every story starts with the introduction of a new character from places like Madrid or Melbourne. You didn’t know Danny was going to be this popular, had be always been this popular? Could you be this popular?

The truth is, the world of solo travellers is a lot more social than you might think. Everyone is in a new place, feeling lonely, and eager to step out of their comfort zone. However that’s not to say there isn’t a bit of strategy to the whole thing.

Friends Having Fun

Be Social!

The first rule to making new friends is to get yourself out there! No one is going to start a conversation with the girl camped out in her bunk all day or the guy with his earbuds in staring at his phone. Station yourself in the common room of your dorm, go out to a bar, or find an event near you! And say hi! Sometimes everyone is just as nervous as you are, so be the first to break the ice!

Winter Hike

Take a Tour

One of the easiest ways to make friends while you’re travelling is to take a tour! You may associate guided tours with retirees and cruise ships, but there are tons of groups out there for all ages and demographics, many of which are cost comparable to solo-travelling once all is said and done! Tour companies like Rooted Travel Co. are geared to solo-travellers and couples who are looking to meet new people and get off the beaten path. Rooted offers several tours and people from all over the world have written us raving about their experience.

Still not convinced? Read about Carly’s experience travelling Vancouver Island with Rooted Travel Co. here.

Stay in Hostels

The hostel is often the social hub of the solo-travelling world! These affordable substitutes for hotels draw young people from all over, often boast shared kitchen facilities and lounges, and frequently host events geared at getting travellers to mingle! Not one to stay in a dorm room? No problem! Most hostels have female-only dorms or even private rooms.

Take Advantage of Events

If you’re staying in a hostel, then make sure you’re asking about events when you first check in and attend as many as you can. However if you’re not staying in a hostel then no worries, there are lots of places to find events put together for solo-travellers! You can search solo-travel events on eventbrite or designated websites like meetup.com. If you want a bit more long term company sites like joinmytrip.com match travellers together for parts or all of your travels. And if you’re solo travelling as a woman there are lots of events organized just for you on site like travelladies.com.

Couch Surf

Some people will jump at this one, others have already skipped the section, but hear me out. Most people on these apps are often travellers themselves, and meeting people off of couch surfing sites often provides you with the kind of local insight that can make a trip. If you’re a solo travelling as a woman then there are sites like nomadsister.com that are created just for you! Ultimately, this one won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you’re feeling daring it’s certainly worth a try.

Volunteer

Here’s another way to save money, meet locals, and meet fellow travellers! There are several websites now that specialize in matching volunteers from around the world to new opportunities. Websites like workaway.com have been on the scene for quite some time, but they’re getting some competition from Worldpackers.com and Woof.com.

If you are volunteering specifically for the chance to meet fellow travellers then I recommend ensuring that there will be other travellers there during your stay. Still, don’t discount the host! Hosts are often passionate about their home and can tell you a lot about the area, they’re also usually super cool people!

Now get out there are make some friends!

Vancouver Island beyond Tofino: 6 hidden gems for your next road trip

Update: July 5th, 2024

Don’t miss out! Book the Island Wanderer here!

Just a quick ferry ride from the city of Vancouver, Vancouver Island is one of Canada’s best kept secrets, and while people have started to catch-on to Tofino and the Gulf Islands, there remains vast swaths of the island that even the locals rarely explore. So this year, when you’re looking for things to do around Vancouver, take that boat over to Canada’s haven of old growth forest and island life and tick these places off your list!

Rooted Travel Co. offers tours like this one for solo travellers and couples looking to dodge high car rental fees and get a feel for the culture and wilderness of the island! Hear more about Carly’s experience with the Island Wanderer here!

The Nootka Sound

Just up the island from the bustle of Tofino’s famous Clayoquot Sound is a region just as rich in forests, whales, and waves, where you can explore without the crowds. The Nootka sound has historically been connected to Tofino’s Clayoquot sound by steamer but never developed the same tourism industry, perhaps because of her remoteness, perhaps because people just didn’t know she was there. Regardless, she ought to be overlooked no longer!

A2DF21E7-13F7-425B-AD5C-DF7C51CA6E07.webp

This place is a paradise for hikers, anglers, kayakers, or just anyone who might want to witness a little piece of true, Vancouver Island wilderness. Unlike Tofino, the misty mountains of the Nootka sound come right to the ocean’s edge, creating a sense that one has somehow come to the end of the earth.

This is also an incredible area to learn about the Indigenous history of the area. The area has been the homeland of the Nuu-chah-nulth peoples since time immemorial and is the home of several famous chiefs. Friendly cove, which is accessible by boat from the Gold River is the site of an old village and church. If you come here, be ready to leave with a deeper understanding of the island’s history and original peoples.

4CBD8D3F-C811-4A5A-9420-10B3F763776D.webp

Vargas Island

Visible from the town of Tofino in the Clayoquot Sound, Vargas Island is the original home of the Ahousaat People and one of the few places you have the chance to see the elusive sea wolves of the northwest coast. A fantastic place for camping due to her flat sandy beaches, water taxis leave daily from Tofino.

While lots of people might feel a little squirley about camping on an island with wolves, it is usually completely safe so long as you store your food responsibly, leave dogs at home, and follow the directions given by locals and guides. Wolves here do not want anything to do with people, so they will leave you alone. Plus waking up with wolf prints around your tent is perhaps one of the most magical feelings on earth.

Sointula

This little island off the north coast of Vancouver Island offers a facinating insight into a little known slice of BC’s history. Originally settled by a group of Finnish settlers in 1901 it was

meant to be a cooperative society. The modern village still clings to many of these principles.

Besides her interesting economic past, the island is also important to wildlife in the area. Orcas come to the rubbing beaches on the island’s northern point and grey and humpback whales can often also be seen from her shores! Seals, sea lions, and various birds of prey are abundant, so staying on the north coast at Bere Point Campground can feel like a real West Coast Safari!

5BA94EF9-104A-4209-A9C0-0E4BF7CFC72B.webp

Caves

This one is purposefully vague. Vancouver Island is known for her vaste network of caves and so if you’re visiting, you’ve got to get underground at least once! The beautiful Horne Lake boasts a tranquil lakeshore campground and guided tours of the world-famous Horne Lake Caves. However, no matter which caves you enter, be sure you have a guide with you. Caves can be extremely dangerous for inexperienced cavers and the chances of getting lost or stuck are unfortunately high!

Meares Island

Step into Canada’s history of environmentalism on Meare’s Island, a haven of old growth forest. While many companies will drop you off at the dock, we recommend taking a guided kayaking tour out and hear the stories about the fight to

save the forest from the logging companies and to take advantage of the local guide’s knowledge of the ecosystem. See the world-famous ‘tree of life’ and discover species of moss and lichen found nowhere else on earth! On your way over, see raccoons washing their paws by the ocean, kelp beds that keep the ecosystem in balance, and colourful sea stars and annenomies that dot the rocks. There’s no such thing as a mediocre trip to Meares Island.

Broughton Archipelago

Take a kayak tour from BC’s historic Telegraph Cove out into the mysterious Broughton Archepilago. This incredible piece of ocean is the perfect habitat for all kinds of marine wildlife and plays host to migrating humpbacks and the incredible Northern Resident Orcas! If you have the time, bring your tent and camp on one of the many beaches for world class stargazing and some peace and quiet.

Planning your Mountain Getaway with Canada’s Wilderness Hostels

Update: July 5th, 2024

Don’t miss out! Book the Icefields Mountain Explorer or the Banff Wanderer here!

38B5BFA6-D008-48BA-B243-0924C5F37633.webp

Canada has some of the most incredible parks in North America. Her vast expanse of wilderness is a haven of mountain vistas, deep forests, and cascading waterfalls. However if you don’t know how to travel our incredible mountains, you risk missing some crazy hidden gems. I spent two years living in the Canadian Rockies and still feel as though I’ve barely scratched the surface.

A mere two hours from Calgary International Airport are the National Parks of Banff and Jasper, home of the famous Lake Louise, Athabaska Glacier, and Maligne Lake among many other incredible sites that you’ve likely seen photographed but never realized are Canadian.

One of the best kept secrets of the Canadian Rockies are the wonderful Wilderness Hostels. Perfect for the young solo traveler, the Wilderness Hostels, run by Hostelling International, offer affordable lodging right in the middle of the Canadian mountains. They vary from fully wired with running water to unmanned and without utilities. But one thing they do all have in common is four solid walls (perfect for those who are a little bear nervous) and magical views from the front door.

As for modes of transport, the car reigns supreme here. Bus service in Western Canada is severely limited and train travel is both prohibitively expensive and frankly sub-par. So, if you’re going to visit, either rent a car or look into travel companies like Rooted Travel Co. who offer guided multi-day tours and transportation around some of the sights you’d like to see (and some you didn’t even know existed) as well as transportation. You might even find the cost comparable to renting a car (though we assure you the value is far greater).

FF103308-C82D-46E7-8207-03ADCEA31D14.webp

The Icefields Parkway Route

There are two primary routes to take when exploring via the wilderness hostels. The

Icefields Parkway route has the most wilderness hostels along the highway’s two hour scenic drive from Banff to Jasper. Featuring the chance to walk on top of a glacier, world-class climbing locations, miles of backcountry trails, and many beautiful glacial lakes, the Icefields Parkway is classically at the top of the list of things to do in Banff and Jasper National Parks.

Yet there are huge portions of this world-famous road that the average tourist misses completely! Rarely hiked trails, beautiful canoe routes, and uncrested mountain tops abound and so the hidden gems of the Icefields Parkway remain rarely seen and ready to explore. It’s the existence of so many of these hidden gems that leads me to suggest the guided route.

There is an extensive list of wilderness hostels along the way, but a few of our favorites are: HI Mosquito Creek, HI Rampart Creek, HI Beauty Creek, and HI Mount Edith Cavell. Find the rest of the list here.

Companies like Rooted Travel Co. offer guided tours like this one, focussed on getting you off the road and into the backcountry. They also feature the chance to try some of the pastimes the Rockies are famous for: like lead climbing, white water rafting, and canoeing, all with an experienced guide to ensure your safety.

The Highway One Route

The other route you could take is the Highway One route. Explore what Albertans refer to lovingly as their backyard and stop in the beautiful towns of Field, Banff, and Canmore. If you are searching for an experienced guide, Rooted Travel Co. offers an eight day guided trip along this route as well.

This route is perfect for the mountain bikers, gondola chasers, and food lovers. It’s a little less physically intense while giving you a better sense of the people of the Rocky Mountains and the towns that have put Canada on the map.

Our favourite HI Wilderness Hostels on this Route are: HI Kananaskis, HI Castle Mountain, and HI Yoho.

6803541F-D578-4E8F-8218-20B20BCA4FD7.webp

Regardless of where you end up going, make sure you leave room for the endless wilderness of the Rockies while planning your Canadian road trip. Because if there’s one thing we definitely have up here it’s space. So come over and breathe it all in.

You certainly won’t regret it.

To me

Dear Traveller,

We’ve all been there, the trip didn’t make it out of the group chat… again. Honestly at this rate you’re never even going to make it on the plane!

That’s why we’re here with a new and revolutionary idea: screw ‘em! Let them scroll through instagram at home, seething with jealousy because you went anyways and now whatever half cooked reason they came up with for the last minute cancellation is starting to look a little weak, even to them!

But it’s too late, because dear traveller I’m going to paint an even better picture for you, you’ve already met new travel buddies!

Companies like Rooted Travel Co. (that’s us!) specialize in bringing people together who want to travel and want to make it out of the group chat! Our customers are hungry to learn about new places, try new things, and above all meet people like you!

And for a limited time, people like you are getting 10% off any of our signature tours with code DITCHYOURFRIENDS.

So what are you waiting for? Book today!

Cheers,

Chris Hume

To me

Dear Traveller,

I’m coming at you from the peaceful hideaway of Sointula off the tip of the Pacific Northwest’s best held secret, Vancouver Island.

Am I biased? Yes! I was born on the Island in the beautiful coastal city of Victoria. But I’m not wrong. The Island, as the locals call it, is home to some of Canada’s most dramatic landscapes, history, and culture. So I’m gonna tell you why you should book the Island Wanderer tour with a series of photos I’ve take over the last two weeks as I’ve followed one of our tours up the coast!

rootedtravelco. Operating on the land we call Canada comes with a heavy responsibility. On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Rooted Travel Co. wants to remind and recommit ourselves to teaching visitors to Canada about the people who have lived here since time immemorial. Our tours feature indigenous knowledge passed on by indigenous teachers. We believe that teaching indigenous knowledge requires indigenous minds. Today we are thinking about how fortunate we are to have those minds with us.
